With the temperature on the rise, the record snowfall we received this season will begin to melt, so you may end up with water in your basement or crawl space, even if you have never had it before. Here are some tips to try to prevent damage to your property and belongings.

  • Clear standing snow away from basement windows and your foundation
  • Make sure gutters are not blocked and drain at least 8 feet from the house
  • Keep a working wet/dry shop vac on hand
  • If you have a sump pump check to make sure it is operating properly
  • Keep an extra set of sump pump hoses on hand in case they freeze at night
  • Keep an extra sump pump on hand if you have an older sump pump in use
  • Have a battery backup power system or generator in case you lose power
  • Move as much personal property to higher levels as possible
  • Report any clogged street drains near your property to your city or town

Please Note:  If you have water seep into your basement or crawl space, whether or not you have the coverage, we suggest you have a professional assess the damage and perform the clean up to prevent future mold issues.
