Avoiding Ice Dams

The recent cold snap confirms winter is here! About this time last year, the horrible ice dams that caused millions of dollars in roof repairs were starting to form. The bone-chilling nights and bright sunshine during the days are a perfect combination, and with every snowfall, the probability of ice dams forming increases. Here are some tips to help you avoid ice dams.

  • Clear snow and ice off the roof before it melts
  • Make sure you use the proper tools, such as a good roof rake
  • Hire a trusted professional if you don’t plan to remove the snow yourself
  • Shovel around downspouts to keep your gutters clear and able to drain freely

Ice dams indicate too much snow accumulation on a roof that may lead to even bigger problems such as collapse. A little preventive maintenance goes a long way in avoiding costly claims.

As a reminder, the contents of your home damaged by water that leaks through a roof are NOT covered unless you have purchased the special risk coverage for your contents.  If you have any questions about your coverage, call us at 888-850-9400.
