Updates to Massachusetts Flood Map Zones

FEMA is in the process of updating the flood map zones for all communities in Massachusetts.

Most of the maps have not been updated since the 1970’s and with so many new areas flooding that have never flooded before, many communities will experience zone changes.  These zone changes could result in more expensive flood insurance premiums, or banks to require customers to purchase flood insurance where previously they were not required to.

Any mortgage that is federally backed (i.e. FDIC banks) will require flood insurance on the property if it is in a high hazard zone.  If you are required to obtain a flood insurance policy due to zone changes, you will receive a notice from your mortgage company or bank.

If you would like to find out when your community flood zones are changing, call your community’s Flood Plain Manager for information on zones changing in your area.
