The 2013 Hurricane season started June 1 and will end on November 30. Weather experts are predicting that the 2013 hurricane season will be an active one. Here are some basic planning tips to help you be ready:

  • Make sure you have fresh batteries in a weather radio to listen for information from the National Weather Service.
  • Check and if necessary, restock your disaster supplies.
  • Reinforce your windows with storm shutters, especially if you live on the coast.
  • Create an evacuation plan and discuss it with your family.
  • Have a designated meeting place since your family may not be together when disaster strikes.
  • Program “in Case of Emergency” (ICE) contacts into your family’s cell phones so emergency personnel can contact someone if a family member is unable to use their phone.
  • Find out about your community’s response plan.
  • Have a plan for your pets if the local shelters will not accept them.

If a hurricane is imminent:

  • Fill up your vehicles with gas.
  • Turn your refrigerator to the coldest setting and keep the door closed as much as possible
  • Turn off any propane tanks and shut off any utilities that you can.
