Recently in the greater Springfield area, vehicles that were damaged during hurricane Sandy have been re-sold with reconstructed titles issued from Oregon. Even though these vehicles have reconstructed titles, they may not have undergone any type of salvage inspection. The water damage may have been covered up, but the long-term effects of the damage could include electrical system failure and safety problems.

To date, the Registry of Motor Vehicles has seen more than 50 titles from Oregon as part of this scam. They are also seeing salvage titles issued from New York and New Jersey as well that may not have had the proper salvage inspections. The Registry of Motor Vehicles is paying particular attention to these types of titles and urges consumers to visit www.carfax.com/flood or www.vehiclehistory.gov before making a purchase.
