Now that better weather is here to stay, joggers are back out on roads and trails. Jogging is a great way to get your exercise and clear your head, but it requires more than just stamina. Here are some tips to make sure your run is fun and safe:

  • Carry your cell phone with you and make sure you have entered your ICE contact (In Case of Emergency).
  • Always stay alert and aware of what’s going on around you.
  • Don’t wear headphones – the music can interfere with your concentration and hearing.
  • Run with a partner or dog.
  • Tell friends and family of your favorite running routes.
  • Carry a noise maker or get training in self-defense.
  • Run against traffic so you can observe approaching vehicles and have more time to react.
  • Avoid unpopulated or unlit areas.
  • To keep potential stalkers guessing and to keep your routine interesting, alternate your running route pattern.
  • Carry identification and write your name and phone number on the inside sole of your running shoe.
  • Trust your intuition about a person or an area – if something doesn’t feel right it, it isn’t.

Have a great run and stay safe out there!
